Early Reading

Each week we will send home a reading book and a library book.

Please write in their reading diary every time you hear them read. Please aim for at least 3 reads a week.

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. There are two types of reading book that your child will bring home:

A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.

A library book- their sharing book.  Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading practice book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Please watch this reading at home video.

Spring 2025- Learning Means the World

We loved this topic!

Autumn 2 2024- Spring 1 2025

Come Fly With Me- Arctic Circle.

We learnt about the geography of continents and oceans, where north and south of the world is, the animals and people of the Arctic. We identified physical and human features. We will learn about the location, weather and climate in the Arctic, as well as the wildlife that lives there. Inuit people, their traditions and customs.

In art, we made innukshuk figures, collaged backgrounds and combined our photos of figures and collage to make beautiful pictures. We then looked at the sculpture of Antony Gormley and used clay to make our own sculptures.

In music, we learnt about diction and position to sing. We practised tongue twisters and singing games. We found out about Inuit throat singing. We really enjoyed trying it out!

Our English writing was based on the book 'The Lights That Dance In the Night'. We focussed on descriptive language and used adjectives to describe characters and settings.

Jurassic Hunter- Spring 2 2025

Jurassic Hunter is a history-based theme, with a focus on the four competencies of courage, commitment, creativity and community, integrating the subjects of art, science, English and geography. The story of Mary Anning, the world’s most famous female palaeontologist, is both challenging and inspirational for the children.

Unity in the community - Spring 2 2025

During “Unity in the Community” we will be learning about the area we live in, with a geography focus. We will develop our geographical skills, local knowledge and understanding through learning about our school, the features of its grounds, the surrounding area and how it has changed over time. We will also learn all about the importance of acting responsibly within both the school and the wider community.
